June 8th vs. Tampa Bay

Top 1- Pettite got himself into a bases loaded jam with two outs, but got out of it (good play by Jeter to get the out on a slow roller).
Bottom 1- Teixiera hit a monster shot to the second level in right field, but otherwise an uneventful half inning. Yankees 1, Rays 0.
Top 2- Excellent throw by A-Rod to get Michel Hernandez for the first out.  Beat the runner by a half step, at most. 2 Ks by Pettite for the final two outs.
Bottom 2- Single by Cano to left field right in front of Carl Crawford.  And Michael Kay is eating ice cream on the air.  Jorge Posada flies out to left field, near the foul line for the first out.  Hideki Matsui pops up to Evan Longoria at 3rd.  He really has been struggling lately.  Nick Swisher launched a two run home run to deep right center (possibly the bleacher section) Yankees 3, Rays 0.  Melky Cabrera flies out to right, along the same line as the Swisher home run, but he got too far underneath it, and just missed getting a home run of his own.
Top 3- B.J. Upton grounds out to Teixiera, good play to get the first out.  He really is such an upgrade from Jason Giambi, both in offense and defense (and lack of steroid use and sleezy mustache.)  Carl Crawford grounds a single past Jeter into left field.  Pettite strikes out Longoria for the second out, and his third strikeout, then strikes out Pena for his fourth to end the half-inning.
Bottom 3- Jeter breaks his bat and grounds out to shortstop for the first out.  Damon flies out to deep center.  Teixiera grounds out weakly to first for the final out.
Top 4- Zobrst grounds to A-Rod, but Alex muffs it and can't make the play.  Andy Petitte then throws a wild pitch, Zobrst to second.  Zobrst tags up and gets to third on a deep fly ball to Nick Swisher in right field.  Hernandez singles up the middle and Zobrst scores, Yankees 3, Rays 1.  Kapler hits a two run home run to left field, after Andy just missesa called third strike.  Some fan throws the ball back ( good for him) Yankees 3, Rays 3.  This is now looking similar to Andy's start last wednesday, when he labored and only lasted five innings, though the Yankees gave him the lead tonight, as opposed to last week, when he gave up the lead in the first inning and the Yankees never caught up.  Groundout to Cano for the second out.  Pettite walks Upton.  Fly ball to center to end the inning.
I've decided I'm not going to be as detailed with the plays, and will only write when something interesting happens, or scoring plays, but not every at bat.
Bottom 4- 1,2,3 inning.  And Michael Kay chastises BJ Upton for chewing tobacco, "Take it out of your mouth, B.J." That's what she said (?).
Top 6- Andy still in the game, but probably not for too long.  People up in the bullpen.
Bottom 6- Phil Hughes is up in the bullpen.  Will we finnaly see how Girardi is planning on using him?  Johnny Damon back to his former HR ways, 12th of the year, a solo shot to right on a hanging curve, Yankees 4, Rays 3.  Kay points out that there has not been a game at Yankee Stadium this year without a home run!
Top 7- Phil Hughes' first appearance out of the bullpen.  94-95 mph fastballs, with good control. And strikes out Longoria for the final out.  Great inning, hopefully they keep him in for the 8th.
Top 8- Joe didn't keep Hughes in for the 8th???
Bottom 8- Jeter homer the other way, Yankees 5, Rays 3.
Top 9- Mariano in for the save.  Hopefully a quick inning, we may need him a lot over the next six games.
Good game, not a particularly impressive performance, but decent pitching by Pettite, good bullpen (Phil Hughes and Coke) and power hitting wins it for them.  Not very exciting, but they get the job done, win the series, and now they go into Boston with the AL East lead.
